Prevention of wrinkles

As said above, leather clothing is not like your regular clothing. Most people don’t tend to take care of their clothes that much. We have all been there, coming home after a long day at work completely drained of energy. In this situation, most of us just toss our clothes in the closet. It is because we know that any wrinkles formed can be easily removed by ironing our clothes. Leather jackets don’t work that way. You need to take extra care when handling or storing your leather jacket to avoid damage of any sort. In this case, it this much better to take care of the problem before it happens as the actual problem can be pretty tricky to deal with. With that said, let’s take a look at some of the preventive measures you can take to avoid wrinkle formation in your leather jacket.

  • Using leather conditioners

Sometimes the best solution is the most obvious one. Leather conditioners exist for a reason and that reason is to help you maintain your jackets. The polymers and emollients used in these conditioners are excellent for reducing the stiffness of your jacket and avoiding any wrinkle or crack formation. Most of the conditioners are water based and have the right amount of moisture required for conditioning your jacket. It is compulsory that you condition your jacket once every month or two to ensure its longevity. Conditioners also help in maintaining the shine of your jackets.

  • Using a garment bag

This should be a no brainer. We frequently sue garment bags for clothes that are sensitive to make sure they are not damaged in any way. So it is also a good idea to carry your leather jacket around in a garment bag. A garment bag will ensure that your jacket is safe and will avoid wrinkle formations. It will prevent folding of your jacket that can give rise to other problems. It will also protect your jacket from any other material you have packed in your case during travels.

  • Use hangers

And not just any hangers. Leather jackets are heavier and sturdier than your usual clothing. A good quality hanger will ensure that your jacket doesn’t get bend and sustain any fiber damage. A good quality hanger can really extend the lifespan of a jacket by months.

How to remove wrinkles

You can use the following methods to remove wrinkles from your leather jacket:

  • Iron your jacket

Now, this is not your run of the mill ironing session. Ironing a leather jacket is not easy. Generally, ironing your leather jacket is not recommended. But you can this method if you are careful enough. The basic rule is that the iron should not come in contact with your jacket. That means you would have to place a cotton towel or a pillowcase over the wrinkled part of your jacket and then iron it. Before you start, make sure to sue the lowest heat setting available on your iron. You do not want to expose your jacket to any additional heat. Place the wrinkled part on the iron board and place the suggested materials on top of the wrinkled section. Then start carefully ironing your jacket.

  • Flattening by books

This may sound comical but depending on the type of your leather material, this method actually works. The title says it all. You will be using your books to flatten the portion of your leather jacket that is wrinkled. Take your jacket and place it on a hard surface. Use a tile floor or a wooden table. Remember the surface has to be flat with no bumps involved. Place your jacket and straighten the wrinkled area by little force. Then place a large book or other heavy material which is safe. Leave it and check in the morning to see the results.

  • Steaming in washroom

Another simple method that you can use to achieve your goal is by home steaming your leather jacket. The normal cloth steamer is out of question as it will damage your leather jacket. To avoid this, hang your leather jacket in a sturdy hanger. Take it with yourself in the washroom. Hang it there safely and make sure it doesn’t fall. Now all you have to do is take a bath. Your mission here is to build as much steam in the bathroom as you can. This will take you around 20 minutes. Let your leather jacket get wet during the whole session. After this dry it and pull to remove any additional wrinkles.

You can remove wrinkles from your leather jacket by using the above mentioned methods. Remember, it is much better to take precautionary measures while handling your jacket to avoid the wrinkle formation problem in the first place.
